A Children’s Storybook – We Are All Beautiful

Background
Three mothers from the strategy team came together for this creative project. As working moms who always wished we had more time with our children, we decided to create content that would allow us to share our hearts with them. What story could we tell? As mothers working in the beauty industry, we wanted to talk about beauty itself. At first, we considered telling a story about the negative aspects of makeup, a practical concern for us as we raise young children who are becoming very interested in it. But our thinking evolved. We began asking bigger questions: “What is beauty?” “How do we explain it to a child?” We decided to tell a story filled with the hope that our children would grow up to discover the many different kinds of beauty in the world and experience the joy that comes from that discovery. Our new mission became: “Let’s instill in them the ability to see the world as beautiful!”
To do this, we first needed to understand the hearts of children today. The pandemic had taken away their ordinary, everyday lives. So much was restricted, and connecting with the world became difficult. While it was a challenging time for everyone, we were particularly worried about the well-being of our children.
The kind of beauty we wanted to talk about is something you can only see when you’re happy. So, with the wish that our children would be happy and have the strength to see beauty, we decided to create a story that could offer a little bit of inner strength.
Project goal
This story is about the beauty that exists between you, me, and all of us—a story we want to tell our own precious children. We wanted to convey the message that the world we live in is a good place, that differences are not wrong, just diverse, and that every single person is special, precious, and beautiful. To make this message approachable for children, we used simple words and familiar situations. We created the content as three short, easily accessible video episodes.
For this project, we actively utilized AI programs. We used Naver’s Clova Dubbing for the voice acting and a combination of Midjourney and DeepL for the illustrations.
We created the visuals by generating sequential images in Midjourney.
It was a fascinating process, though not as simple as we initially thought.
First, we had to create a detailed description for our main character:
“
A 6-year-old girl with shoulder-length red hair,
wearing a skirt and red shoes. Her eyes are large and round with brown irises.
”
To this, we added descriptors for the atmosphere, desired art style,
and even named specific illustrators to emulate. We wrote the prompts
in Korean and used the DeepL translation service to easily convert them for Midjourney.
After many rounds of testing and refinement, we were able to create the
main character and the background images that fit our story.
The images don’t always turn out as commanded. Depending on the
specific words and expressions used, the results can sometimes be completely unexpected.
But even though they weren’t always a perfect match for our vision, we were able to
generate a wide variety of images much more simply than if we had drawn them by hand.
The main image below was used as a consistent base to generate subsequent, sequential images.
