Re:Shaped #2. Exploration into the Reusability of Sustainable Materials | Upcycling paper waste from cosmetic packages to create objects with new functions

AMOREPACIFIC May 16, 2024
Summary
During the COVID-19 period, we are facing the reality and severity of accumulating waste papers, which are beginning to surpass the amount of discarded plastic due to overproduction followed by a reduction in demand. Although paper is an eco-friendly material, the production of boxes generates a considerable quantity of paper scraps, and box packaging can be seen as one of the fastest to diminish in its value as a packaging solution. Through this project, we have envisioned objects that incorporate the meaning of reuse by utilizing the paper waste produced and discarded by our company through environmentally friendly methods.

By expanding the form and function of paper that
has served its purpose,
we explored various
applications for objects imbued
with the value of
reuse and explored various ways to utilize them.

Re:Shaped #2 Objects made from nature
Process
In collaboration with Left Right Object Studio,
which specializes in paper-based work,
we
conducted experiments with various types of
paper from each brand to explore new possibilities.
The goal we sought to uphold throughout this process
was to implement an eco-friendly approach
at every
stage, from production to disposal, while maintaining
the inherent properties of the paper,
so that even
after upcycling or future disposal, it remains recyclable
and reusable, thereby preserving
the sustainable
essence of paper. We collaborated with Left Right
Object Studio, which utilizes paper in its work.

The only things needed in the production process
are water, wind, and care.
These are the only
elements required—simple and natural.
This new,
sustainable process goes beyond mere object
creation to embody infinite sustainability.

This paper pulp, made from water and paper, retains its
unique color while maintaining its
original texture as it is
formed into a new shape. At this stage, no molds are
created separately;
instead, existing materials are utilized
effectively to shape the objects, and the texture slowly
develops over 1–2 weeks, drying naturally with the wind.
Finally, we applied starch paste to
enhance the hardness
of the objects and complete the finishing touches.

We displayed the finished products alongside the
actual products they were used with,
so that the
difference between before and after upcycling is
easily recognizable in a single scene.
Re: Shaped. A
In the case of Han-Yul, rather than a standardized
shape, the box harmoniously combines with natural
elements to seamlessly blend into any space. We have
developed it so that it can harmoniously integrate into
any environment. The overall design is cohesive, yet
each piece has a distinct presence and is displayed
alongside the product, serving as a brand-enveloping
element that conveys eco-friendly values.

Re: Shaped. B
In the case of Hera, we utilized the black ink used in
the Compy line and lipstick to create a simple
cylindrical shape and a texture reminiscent of paper
pulp and natural cracks by leaving some blank space.
The design allows it to be used as a vase cover for
empty bottles, and the half-circle tray can be used to
overlap with the vase or used separately.

Re: Shaped. C
In the case of Sulhwasoo, the orange color of the
single box is realized in different tones during the
paper pulp drying process, creating unique shades and
forming an object series that allows one to appreciate
the nuances of color. This series is designed as an
object that can be enjoyed as a work of art. As it is not
concluded in a perfect form, it is not fixed to a specific
use and can be freely arranged in various ways.
Harmoniously arranging the objects with the products
has been considered from the planning stage.

For sharing their insights on the production process
and final results,
we hope that the importance of reuse
will be understood and continues to grow.

We also hope it will remain with us for a long time.
