Odyssey Chapter Five and Maison Mihara Yasuhiro have collaborated and created a limited edition design. These two brands, each with
over 30 years of heritage and a resolute commitment to their own paths, have come to work on a project themed “Mutant.”
This collaboration provided us a design opportunity with a wide range of products beauty industry to fashion industry,
including two items from the Odyssey Chapter Five Sanctuary line, a limited edition shoe & fabric spray, limited edition
Blakey sneakers, and various accessories. Great care was taken to ensure that this partnership went beyond mere logo play,
reflecting a complete collaboration from the perspectives of both the brands and their fans.
Background
We began the project by listing the collaborative products developed with Maison Mihara Yasuhiro and establishing the level of design involvement and brand priority for each item.
Our scope of design development included the limited-edition designs for the Odyssey Chapter Five Sanctuary toner and moisturizer, a new fragrance for the shoe & fabric spray, the set packaging design, and the limited-edition sneakers.
In the sneaker design, we prioritized highlighting the Maison Mihara Yasuhiro brand identity with real-way wearability in mind.
For the cosmetic products, Odyssey took precedence, with a strong focus on conveying the distinctiveness and exclusivity of the limited-edition items.
Odyssey X MMY Graphic
In this project, we had to consider not only the existing delicate and precise printing methods but also jacquard and fabric printing used in the sneaker and product designs.
As such, evaluating print feasibility was prioritized before moving into the design phase.
We measured the minimum type size from the sneaker graphics and sample fabric labels, and based on those benchmarks, we designed in a conservative and stable manner—ensuring both brands’ identities were preserved within technically reliable parameters.
Logo Design
Based on this process, we aimed to unify all graphic outputs from the Maison Mihara Yasuhiro Limited Project under a cohesive logo system that would strongly convey the project’s identity.
To do so, we harmoniously combined the MMY box logo with the Odyssey Chapter Five logo in a balanced composition.
Additionally, we developed and distributed a comprehensive logo usage guide that outlines minimum size, clear space, and exceptional use cases—ensuring consistent application across all media.
Sneakers Design – Upper
The Odyssey Limited Sneaker design was developed using MMY’s Blakey model, known for its collaborations with various brands.
Building on MMY’s initial design proposal, we further refined the sneaker by incorporating graphic elements that reflect the Odyssey brand identity.
For the upper, we introduced the deep green colorway of the Sanctuary line—a new addition to the Blakey silhouette—and subtly communicated the Chapter Five identity with black embroidery on the side graphic.
Side graphic design proposals that combined the V motif with the Blakey graphics.
Sneakers Design – Tongue Label, Insole Graphic & Hill Cap
While the Chapter Five identity was subtly expressed on the sneaker upper for real-way wearability, the tongue label and insole graphics were designed to boldly convey the character of Chapter Five Sanctuary, amplifying the product’s limited-edition appeal.
We explored a range of graphic directions—from those aligned with the established Odyssey Chapter Five guidelines to more experimental concepts—ensuring that the Blakey silhouette’s identity remained intact.
After multiple drafts and discussions considering production feasibility, a final direction was selected.
For the jacquard tongue label, we adhered to MMY’s label specifications while adjusting the margins and proportions to fully include the Chapter Five logo without omission.
The printed insole design was approached more freely, using visuals that evoke the mood and scent of Sanctuary. As proposed by MMY, the heel caps featured one logo per shoe, balancing the identities of both brands.
Product Design
Toner & Moisturizer
For the product design, we strongly emphasized its limited-edition nature by incorporating real fabric labels, clearly distinguishing it from regular products.
Going beyond mere logo play, we pursued a complete brand collaboration—preserving Chapter Five’s calm and refined sensibility while integrating MMY’s deconstructivist design language and the grunge aesthetic of its lookbook.
This led to a proposed crack design concept that evokes the image of a cosmetic bottle being shattered and reassembled.
Set Design
We removed the descriptive text from the set package to focus solely on powerfully conveying the concept of the collaboration design.
The logo was printed with texture to give the impression that a label has flown in and shattered a glass-made package.
To avoid visual fatigue from repeating the box logo on every side, we restricted its use to the main collaboration logo and incorporated game-pack-inspired graphics on the sides and back.
Limited Shoe & Fabric Spray
The Shoe & Fabric Spray is a new product launched as part of this limited-edition project. Featuring a completely new scent distinct from the existing Sanctuary fragrance, it was developed with the direct involvement of Mihara Yasuhiro.
To reflect the musky, leathery character of the scent, a new color was introduced, and a vacuum-metallized finish was applied to enhance its premium feel.
Given that the product is primarily viewed from above, the logo placement was visually adjusted for better balance, with the MMY logo positioned centrally to commemorate the MMY Limited collaboration.
As a fragrance spray, the product required mandatory elements such as recycling labels and safety warnings.
We carefully designed the back layout to harmonize these regulatory requirements with the refined sensibilities of both MMY and Odyssey.
Because Mihara Yasuhiro participated in the fragrance development, the back label drew inspiration from Japanese vertical writing.
The layout was composed with balanced typography weight, brand logos, and required information, creating a structured, frame-like visual that integrates all elements seamlessly.
